Volunteers
assist in preparing the food, serving the meals,
and in cleaning up. Newman Centre volunteers take
care of those responsibilities for the Tuesday evening
dinner each week. They work from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00
p.m. Volunteers do not have to work every Tuesday;
they can be scheduled on the Tuesdays that suit
them. Individuals for whom the Tuesday schedule
is not convenient can assist on an individual basis
at other meals on other days.
St. Francis
Table is not merely a soup kitchen, but an "outreach
restaurant!" Patrons are seated in a dining
room, they are given a choice of meal, and are waited
on by volunteers. To preserve the dignity of the
patrons, they are asked to pay $1.00 for the meal
(although, no one is ever turned away). While most
of the patrons are homless, many are senior citizens
or those with mental health issues that live on
a fixed income. "The Table" is a vibrant
social community!
