Below
are reflections offered by current liturgical ministers
who volunteer their time and talents to the Newman Centre
Masses:
"Thanks
to Sr. Anne Lemiere, I became a sacristan in 2000. Although
the tasks sound daunting, the ministry has been very
rewarding. I get to know many people: parishioners,
ministers, and priests. This ministry has made me realize
Jesus' presence in our community. Personally, I have
gained most of my leadership, organization, and communication
skills from this ministry."
Lanny Hui, Sacristan
"One
of the most powerful aspects of the Eucharistic Ministry
is the connection it creates between me and Christ,
and through Christ, me and those receiving communion
is interlaced. I am always awed by being able to hold
the presence of Jesus in my hands and then hand Him
to others. This has amazing spiritual rewards. Through
the Eucharistic Ministry, we can fulfill our call to
bring Christ to others."
Sarah
Hamilton, Eucharistic Minister
"God
calls each of us by our name, and it is each person
who is invited to a deeper communion with God. At the
same time, God calls us to reach out to others and celebrate
our relationship with God as a community, and to act
as a community in spreading His love. With
this understanding, I decided to try the hospitality
ministry in 2001. I had found a way to return to the
community some of what it had brought me in a useful
way. Yet, through this ministry, God and the community
has given me even more than what I have given them.
Serving people
in even the simplest of welcoming gestures is a way
to make God present to the community and the community
present to God. I have deepened my faith and my relationship
with God, and I find myself closer to God. Welcoming
people is often the first step in knowing them and building
relationships. I have met, and know many good and wonderful
people, some of which I am proud to call friends.
It is through
ourselves, each other and the community that the Word
of God gets its full meaning and our encounter in God
truly transforms us."
Serge
Paquet, Hospitality Minister
"Being
a lector / reader during mass is both a privilege and
an honour for me. I recognized that reading the Word
of God is an awesome task. One cannot be filled with
egotism, but has to use one's voice to give utterance
to the power of the Word. It is in a way a process of
centering oneself in the reading and using one's understanding
and life experience to speak the meanings that resonate
in the text. For me, it is a very humbling task, which
usually moves me very deeply, in spite of myself."
John
J. Kennedy, Lector
"Thanks
to Sr. Eileen McLaughlin, I have the opportunity to
serve at the altar for the past seven years. Serving
at the altar makes me feel very close to Christ. This
personal relationship that I have gained through serving
cannot be described in words. It helps me to become
more aware of God's presence in everyday life and causes
me to embrace God in everything I do. For me, it becomes
an eye-opening experience of communicating with our
Lord."

Kwok, Altar Server
