Sacrament of Marriage

The German theologian Walter Kasper has written : "Marriage belongs to the order of creation and to the order of redemption." It is precisely because of marriage's great importance that the Church wants us to prepare well for this Sacrament. Here at the Newman Centre, we take requests for the Sacrament of Marriage very seriously. In order to be eligible for the Sacrament of Marriage in this parish community, you must be registered in the parish. The first step in the process is to set up a meeting with the pastor. During this meeting, the various Preparation Programs for Marriage will be presented to you. The Newman Centrehas an excellent Marriage Preparation Program led by couples from this parish community. There is also the possibility of attending an Engaged Encounter Retreat at Queen of Apostles Retreat House in Mississauga. As well, we offer the opportunity for more individual counselling preparation for marriage through the Catholic Family Services of the Archdiocese of Toronto.

The Catholic Church has always promoted the understanding that sexuality and commitment go hand and hand. Sexual activity must be interwoven in one fabric with spouse, family, and commitment. The dedication to loving and respecting the unique power and pleasure of sex flourishes best in a healthy marriage and solid family structure.

Much goes into planning a wedding: clothing, reception, photos, invitations, and so forth. All of this is expensive. Don't shortchange the spiritual side of your marriage. Getting ready on the inside is more important than preparing on the outside.

"O God, through you a woman is joined to her husband
and society is chiefly ordered by that blessing
which was neither lost by original sin nor washed away in the flood."
