Volunteers from the Newman Centre
have been assisting the Missionaries of Charity
in hosting an after-school-tutoring program for
under-privileged children in Parkdale for the past ten years. The partnership
between the Sisters and the Newman Centre began
only days after Mother Theresa`s death in 1997 and
since then has enabled hundreds of volunteers to
share in the lives of some very special children.
This
program requires a once-a-week commitment from volunteers:
either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday (NOT
Thursday) from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.; or Saturday (10:00
- 11:00 am).
The
tutoring takes place during the week at Holy Family
Catholic School
(141 Close Avenue):

On
Saturday, the tutoring program moves to the Missionaries
of Charity Mother House (185 Dunn Avenue):

During
the hour of tutoring, Newman Centre volunteers,
along with Missionaries of Charity, help the children
with their homework. Many of the children are new
to Canada and English is their second language so
this time also presents an excellent opportunity
for English conversation. Expertise in any
given subject is not required.
