Newman Centre: Student Campus Ministry Responsibilities


Overall

  • Participate in the Liturgical Life of the Centre: Be part of a Sunday Mass Team
  • Assist at daily Mass as server/sacristan - approx. once per week as scheduled
  • Desk Duty - approx. once per week as scheduled
  • Dinner and connected dinner chores - approx. once per week
  • Attend and participate in weekly team meetings and prayer sessions
  • Attend Campus Minister Orientation Retreat at beginning of academic year
  • Serve as coordinator or liaison for at least one Newman Centre program or activity
  • Be open to helping whenever special functions or needs arise


Participation in the Liturgical Life of the Newman Centre

  • Attend Sunday Eucharist. As much as possible, be present at daily Eucharist.
  • Two teams of will be assigned for Sunday Masses to rotate on a regular basis, and to accomplish the following duties:
    • Desk duty (Morning Mass: 9:30 - 11, noon - 1:30; Evening Mass: 6-7, 8-9).
    • Open chapel, and take prayers of the faithful to south lectern.
    • Deliver bulletins to chapel and to the reception area of Newman Centre to be available to students and other visitors
    • Set up the refreshment tables for the social hour following the Masses.
    • Prepare coffee on Sunday mornings; juices for evenings.
    • Serve as a driver to pick-up bread from Harbord Bakery on Sunday mornings.
    • Make announcements of upcoming activities during weekly Mass.
    • Participate or volunteer in core liturgical ministries: sacristan, altar serving, hospitality, reading, and Eucharistic ministry. Engage in other aspects of liturgical ministries based on personal interest including choir*, children's liturgy*, etc.
    • Be present and interact with students and parishioners during social hours following Mass ("working the crowd", solicit sign-ups for student activities, etc.).
    • Clean up after social includes collection of remaining food or beverages from the event, washing dishes and placing them in the pantry. Empty pantry and kitchen trash at the end of the evening - dispose of garbage bags in dumpster behind driveway fence and place recyclables in the appropriate bins.
    *As members of these liturgical ministries, these representatives should assist the Sunday morning team in the regular setup and cleanup duties where possible
  • Attend community prayer times, as scheduled.
  • Serve as Server/Sacristan for daily Mass one day a week (as determined by schedule). Those unable to serve at the daily Mass due to academic conflicts may contribute their time in an additional ministry or program.

Responsibilities associated with being a resident of the Newman Centre

  • Desk Duty (Mon - Fri: 5-9 p.m.; weekends as needed):
    • Staff Newman Centre Reception Desk, demonstrating a spirit of hospitality to all those entering or calling the Centre. Please arrive promptly at 4:50 p.m. and check in with secretary
    • Check lights to ensure they are off and lock up at end of shift
  • Dinner Set-up/Clean-up:
    • Set dining room table for number signed-in; set aside plates for those late
    • Ensure milk and bread are stocked in second floor kitchen
    • Thaw and prepare orange juice and drinks
    • Bring dinner from downstairs kitchen to second floor dining table.
    • Wash dishes in dishwasher and put away dishes
    • Put away leftovers and keep second-floor refrigerator clean (throw away old food, wipe up any spills, etc.)
    • Wipe off counters and tables

Serve as liaison or coordinator for at least one of the following programs or activities

 

Typical Areas of need include:

  • House Rep/In-House Retreat person (avg. 2 hrs. per week)
    • Serve as contact for Team and liaison to staff in all house and parish matters.
    • Prepare Sunday duties, desk duty and dinner setup/cleanup schedules
    • Coordinate team prayer sessions and retreats
    • Serve as Pastoral Advisory Council representative
      • Attend and participate in meetings and activities of the PAC (4 meetings/year)
  • Youth Council representative (avg. 2.5 hrs. per week)
    • Attend Youth Council meetings as a member of the executive
    • Work on retreats and trips for students and young adults of the community
  • Lectures / Mentoring program representative (avg. 2 hrs. per week)
    • Be responsible for hosting and coordinating light receptions for various lecture series at the Centre (Naming the Holy, Youth Council, etc.)
    • Serve as a member of the Mentoring Program organizing committee (winter term)
  • Producing tri-weekly Sunday bulletin (approx. 8-12 hrs. preparation time).
    • Developing text of upcoming events
    • Incorporating contributions from Executive Director and other selected guest writers.
    • Producing original for copying.
    • Ensuring adequate paper supplies.
    • Working with other students and volunteers to copy, collate and staple 600 copies per 3 week production run. Prepare more copies the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the run if there are not enough from the 1st week.
  • Children's Liturgy representative (avg. 3 hrs. per week)
  • First Communion/Confession Preparation representative (avg. 3 hrs. per week)
  • RCIA representative (avg. 3 hrs. per week)
    • Serve as member of RCIA team and attend all meeting/retreats sessions
  • Counting collections from the Weekend Masses
    • on Monday mornings with the secretary (2 regular counters required) (1.5 hrs. per week)
  • Assist at University of Toronto/Newman Centre orientation for both graduate and undergraduate students - staffing tables, providing informational brochures, etc.
Note: Total time contribution of ministries and programs, house chores, and special assignments should be at least 20 hours per month.
