Scholarships

The Newman Centre and the Newman Foundation have developed scholarships over the past years in support of students who work in campus ministry, the arts, and who share and offer their gifts and talents within the Catholic community at the Newman Centre or the wider Catholic community on campus.  The three scholarships currently offered by the Newman Centre are listed below.  Contributions to the scholarship fund are received through the kindness of individual donors, Newman alumni, parishioners, and through the kindness of the Newman Foundation.  All contributions, large or small, are welcomed and tax receipts are made available for any donations. Please consider offering a donation for a scholarship to a deserving student.

The Student Campus Ministry Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who would like to join the campus ministry team for a year but is unable to afford room and board costs associated with living on campus.  Each year,7 - 9 campus ministers, male and female, make application to form the new Campus Ministry Team, which assists the Pastor in working within the parish and on campus while living at the Newman Centre. The scholarship was established in 2003, in honour of Mary and Pat Mulva, former parishioners greatly involved in the Centre. The scholarship is awarded to one student per year. The student is selected by the Pastor and his Admissions Committee and first choice is given to a deserving student who would need assistance with their room and board fees. For information purposes, the room and board fees for the Newman Centre residence is $725 per month, $2,900 per term (4 months) or $5,800 per year (8 months, Sept. - May).  In addition, students can apply as a Summer Campus Minister, June - August (3 months at $725 per month).  Persons wishing to donate to this scholarship may offer contributions large or small.

Established in 2002, this scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually to a deserving medical student who exemplifies the Catholic faith in their lives of service within the community. The award is named in honour of the late Dr. Claude Macdonald, a former chair of the Newman Foundation, distinguished medical doctor and humanitarian. Many of the past winners have assisted the poor and needy of the area, and have done mission work with an appreciation of mission work in the medical field. They are also involved in their parish community.
