INTELLECTUAL AND SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
“I want the intellectual layman to be religious and the devout ecclesiastic to be intellectual.” - - Saint John Henry Newman
With respect to the role of the Catholic Church in a University, St. John Henry Newman wrote: “Here, then, I conceive is the object of the Holy See and the Catholic Church in setting up Universities; it is to reunite things which were in the beginning joined together by God, and have been put asunder by man... I wish the intellect to range with utmost freedom, and religion to enjoy an equal freedom but what I am stipulating for is that they should be found in one and the same place, and exemplified in the same persons… ...I want the intellectual layman to be religious and the devout ecclesiastic to be intellectual." |

FAITH & REASONWith our Faith and Reason Lecture Series, we attempt to bring to life Saint John Henry Newman’s desire to integrate faith and reason on the University Campus. Cardinal Newman strived to work towards forming his students not only intellectually but also spiritually. He challenged his students and reminded them that faith without reason and vice versa is meaningless. |
